Subject:  	Emergency Web Alert System Test

On Tuesday, September 2, 2008, campus will begin to conduct a series of 
tests of the Emergency Web Alert System (EWAS). The System allows Public 
Affairs to post an emergency message on all participating campus Web 
pages. By campus policy, the system will be activated only under 
significant and imminent threat of death, great bodily injury, or 
significant property damage.

The EWAS tests will be conducted in conjunction with the monthly siren 
alert system testing. During the testing period (which will last 
approximately 10 minutes), you may see a test message appear on Web pages 
within the uiuc.edu and illinois.edu domains. The message will appear only 
as pages are refreshed or when you navigate from page to page.

The full testing schedule is as follows:

Tuesday, September 2, 2008 - 10 a.m.
Tuesday, October 7, 2008 - 10 a.m.
Tuesday, November 4, 2008 - 10 a.m.
Annual testing to be scheduled

As part of a comprehensive emergency communications plan, campus units are 
asked to assist in the implementation of the Emergency Web Alert System.  
The implementation process requires webmasters to add one <script> tag to 
their unit's Web pages or templates. Units are asked to have the code in 
place prior to the November 4th system test.

Members of the campus IT community who are responsible for Web pages 
should visit http://www.publicaffairs.illinois.edu/resources/webalert.html 
for details on the Emergency Web Alert System and instructions for adding 
the code.

Pages required to include the EWAS coding include:

-  College and department homepages 
-  All top-level campus sites within the illinois.edu and uiuc.edu 
domains 
-  University Library homepage and catalog gateway 
-  Phonebook Gateway 
-  Express E-mail 
-  UI Now 
-  Public Affairs homepage 
-  Division of Public Safety homepage 

The addition of the <script> to ALL campus web pages is encouraged so that 
the emergency messages can be displayed as widely as possible. We greatly 
appreciate your assistance with this important effort.
