Sexual Misconduct Survey Results
October 3, 2024 5:02 AM

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,

The safety and wellbeing of our students continues to be a top priority at Illinois. To protect our students, it is vital to understand their experiences on our campus.

During the Spring 2024 semester, the university distributed the first state-mandated sexual misconduct survey for students. While we regularly survey campus community members on issues of sexual misconduct, this is the first time that such a survey has been required by the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE). To promote awareness and transparency, the results of this survey have been published on the WeCare website.

The survey’s aim is to gather information about sexual misconduct across state universities in a consistent manner to hold universities accountable, to make information available to the public, and to inform decision-makers who develop and interpret state law.

The IBHE survey includes state-mandated questions about relationships, sexual experiences, experiences with dating violence, and perceptions about safety at Illinois, with some differences in terms and definitions than we have previously used in surveys. Because of these differences in format, this year’s results may not align with previous surveys. However, as we repeat the IBHE survey in the future, we will develop longitudinal data to inform our approach to addressing this important issue.

We ask that you look out for each other, intervene when you see a potential problem, and help others find resources when they have been affected by sexual misconduct. The WeCare website includes a list of resources for students and a list of resources for employees. A variety of reporting options are available for those who have experienced sexual misconduct, including confidential resources and services available through the Title IX Office.

Creating and maintaining a safe and inclusive community is a responsibility that our university takes very seriously. We hope that you review these important resources and use the information to promote your own awareness. Together, we can make a difference.

Sincerely,

Danita M. Brown Young
