2026 Illinois Climate Action Plan launched
April 22, 2026 2:02 PM

Dear staff and faculty,

This week, we formalized the 2026 Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP)the most recent update in our long-term commitment to sustainability, stewardship, and innovation. We encourage everyone to review the plan and join us in the implementation of our goals for this upcoming period.

The iCAP is our campuswide framework that guides our university in reducing emissions, strengthening operations, and expanding research and education in sustainability. This is both an aspirational document and an actionable plan that results in measurable success. Since the launch of the first iCAP in 2010, the university has achieved:

  • Nearly 40% reduction in campus greenhouse gas emissions since 2008

  • More than $120 million saved through energy efficiency upgrades

  • More than 13% of campus electricity powered by clean energy

  • Expanded solar, wind, and geothermal energy systems

  • Increased waste diversion, water efficiency, and sustainable transportation options

These achievements reflect a coordinated effort across students, faculty, staff, and partners to advance practical sustainability solutions, led by the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and EnvironmentThe 202iCAP builds on years of progress and helps position the university for continued impact through measurable, long-term action, education, research, and innovation.

Every corner of our campus has a role to play in reaching our sustainability goals, and I encourage you to explore how this work connects to your own area.

Sincerely,

Charles L. Isbell, Jr.
Chancellor
