Announcing the next dean of the School of Labor and Employment Relations
June 1, 2022 10:31 AM

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I am pleased to share that Dr. Ingrid S. Fulmer has been selected to serve as the new dean of the School of Labor and Employment Relations. Dean Designate Fulmer’s appointment will begin July 1, pending approval by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees.

Dr. Fulmer is the Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement and Faculty Affairs at Rutgers University-New Brunswick and professor in human resource management at the School of Management and Labor Relations. She earned a Ph.D. in management and organization studies from Vanderbilt University. She has expertise in human resource management, organizational behavior and business ethics.

Dr. Fulmer previously served as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and as Director of the Ph.D. program in the School of Management and Labor Relations at Rutgers. She also serves on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management and as International Co-chairperson of the European Institute of Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM) annual workshop on Strategic Human Resource Management. Previously, she served in the elected five-year leadership track and as an elected representative-at-large of the HR Division of the Academy of Management. She has also been the director of the Centre for Workplace Excellence at the University of South Australia Business School. A former associate editor of Academy of Management Review and of the International Journal of Human Resource Management, she is currently on the editorial boards of several academic journals. In her “first career,” prior to completing her Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University and entering academia, she worked as a CPA and consultant.

Her research and teaching are in the areas of human resource management and organizational behavior. Current research interests include compensation system design, pay communication and transparency, valuation of organizational human capital, and management of former (i.e., alumni) employees. She also studies social interactions among people and groups in organizations. Her research has been published in Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Management, Business Ethics Quarterly and Journal of Business Ethics, as well as in other journals and edited volumes.

I want to thank Dean Drasgow for his calm and patient leadership of the School. During his tenure, LER completed a $6 million addition and renovation, the first change to the footprint of the building since 1962. The online master’s program grew, providing the School with a vital new revenue stream. Numerous scholarships and named professorships were completed, including the Derber, Wagner and Soderstrom professorships, enabling the School to attract and retain top faculty and students. The School also met and surpassed its With Illinois campaign goals. I am confident Dr. Fulmer will lead the School to continue to build on those accomplishments.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Fulmer and thank you in advance for welcoming her when she arrives on campus this summer.

Sincerely,

Andreas C. Cangellaris
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost
