Dear Colleagues:

The third installment of our speaker's series, "The Research University in the World of the Future," will be held Sept. 11 at 4:00 p.m. and will feature Larry Faulkner, president emeritus of the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Faulkner is a former head of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also served as dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and later as vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost here at Illinois before accepting the presidency at Texas. Dr. Faulkner was named a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003.

"The Research University in the World of the Future" series is designed to give the campus community a multifaceted look at how higher education is changing to address society's changing needs. As we envision our campus 20 to 50 years into the future, we are exploring how to best position the university for continued relevance and impact.

Dr. Faulkner will deliver his public message from 4-5 p.m. in the auditorium of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, 405 North Mathews Av., Urbana . I hope you can attend, and I invite you to stay for a reception following his speech. Watch for more speakers in the series throughout this academic year.

Thank you for the work you do every day to further our mission of learning, discovery and engagement.

Sincerely,

Phyllis
