Dear Members of the Campus Community:

I am happy to announce that as a result of last year's Illinois Student Senate resolution asking that smoking no longer be allowed on campus, the Urbana campus will become smoke-free late next year. We want to ensure a healthy environment for our entire campus community. There is incontrovertible evidence that smoking is a dangerous addiction and that secondhand smoke affects everyone. In preparation for the smoke-free campus, we will increase the number of smoking cessation programs and will offer them to smokers who would like to quit.

Additionally, I will form subcommittees in the coming weeks to address all of the issues related to the new smoke-free policy. Those groups will include the voices of all campus constituents and will make recommendations to the general Smoke-Free committee.

Sincerely,

Phyllis M. Wise
