Dear Colleagues:

I am delighted to share with you that the fourth installment of our lecture series, "The Research University in the World of the Future," will be held Nov. 13 at 4:00 p.m. and will feature Robert Berdahl, past president, Association of American Universities. Dr. Berdahl is a retired history professor who earned a master's degree from the U. of I. and was the Urbana campus provost from 1987 to 1993. He contends that America's economic strength and stability are directly proportional to the degree at which the nation invests in the education of its citizens and that the investment is not being made at the necessary levels.

"The Research University in the World of the Future" series is designed to give the campus community a multifaceted look at how higher education is changing to address society's changing needs. As we envision our campus 20 to 50 years into the future, we are exploring how to best position the university for continued relevance and impact.

Again, Dr. Berdahl will deliver his public message from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Alice Campbell Alumni Center, 601 S. Lincoln Ave., Urbana.

I hope you will join us.

Sincerely,

Phyllis
