Extreme winter weather conditions continue to present significant challenges to snow removal operations across the country. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, along with many regional universities and municipalities in the Midwest, is dealing with the development of persistent ice conditions due to repeated snow events.

As another round of severe winter weather gets ready to impact Central Illinois, we request that when traveling on campus you take the proper precautions to address the potential for variable conditions. Portions of the campus may remain slick during freezing temperatures.

Facilities & Services crews are putting down salt, sand, and brine in affected locations and will continue to apply a mixture of salt and sand in critical areas such as roads and intersections. Brine is also utilized for the pre-treatment of roads, parking lots, and sidewalks. Building Service Workers will remove snow from facility entrances and spread ice melt on building steps and walkways. Please use caution when walking, biking, or driving on campus as extremely low temperatures can limit the effectiveness of salt and ice melt.

Facilities & Services will work as quickly as practical to expedite removal and keep the campus open and accessible for students, faculty, and staff. In a major snow event, the following university parking lots will be cleared first: http://www.fs.illinois.edu/services/maintenance/snow-removal.  Parking in unplowed lots further complicates and delays snow removal efforts.

If you have questions about snow removal, contact Facilities & Services, 217-333-0340.
