Dear Members of the Campus Community,

The Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) have issued alerts about the potential fire hazard so-called “hoverboards” can present, so the devices will not be allowed in any campus facilities beginning Jan. 18.

The campus policy prohibiting the use of inline skates, roller skates and skateboards in campus facilities is being updated to include a prohibition on self-balancing personal transportation devices, and we ask that you not to bring them to campus. If you already have one of the devices stored in a campus owned, leased, occupied or operated facility, you must remove it at the start of the semester.

The campuswide prohibition covers the use, carrying, charging, storage or other possession of the devices in classrooms, laboratories, meeting rooms and all other campus facilities. Those who violate the policy could face sanctions.

To view the complete policy regarding such devices, visit the CAM after Jan. 18 at http://cam.illinois.edu/

Thank you for complying with this new policy. Our number one priority is the safety of our campus community.

Sincerely,

Jeff Christensen
Director of Public Safety
