Dear members of the Illinois Campus Community,

I want to let you know that I have selected Illinois alumnus Josh Whitman as the new Director of Athletics. Josh is a two-time Illinois alumnus, graduating with Bronze Tablet honors in 2001 while earning a bachelor’s degree in finance, and graduating from law school summa cum laude in 2008.

His work ethic, his passion, his concern for the welfare of student-athletes and his commitment to diversity, as well as his record of leaving programs under his leadership better and stronger than when he arrived were the main factors in my decision. He understands the complexities of modern college athletics, but he hasn’t lost any of the sense of fun and joy that should be part of amateur sports.

At Illinois we want to compete hard, act with integrity and give our student-athletes the kind of positive experiences that stay with them throughout their lives and careers. I am confident that Josh has the background, knowledge and drive to ensure that our athletics program is a source of pride for each of us.

Josh will be introduced to campus tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. The news conference will be broadcast live at www.FightingIllini.com.
