Dear Students,

Welcome back to campus!

As you begin the new semester, we encourage you to take a few moments and visit the Run > Hide > Fight website and review the guidelines for what to do in an emergency.

Emergencies can happen anywhere, anytime. When we’re faced with any kind of emergency – fire, severe weather or if someone is trying to hurt you – we have three options: run, hide or fight.

On the site above, you can watch a two-minute video that explains what to do in any kind of emergency. The Public Safety Department also has a site that lets you see floor plans showing exits, storm refuge areas and areas of rescue assistance (if they exist) for the buildings where you attend classes.

Also, please visit emergency.illinois.edu in order to register your cellphone to receive Illini-Alert text messages so we can notify you in real time when an emergency happens. You may enter up to three cellphone numbers, and we recommend adding a family member’s contact information as well.

We have asked your instructors to review these materials with you on the first day of class. If any of your instructors do not share the information, please ask them to do so. If you have additional questions, please contact the UI Police Department at 217/333-1216.

We wish you a safe and productive semester.

Best regards,

Jeff Christensen Director of Public Safety
