Office of Threat Assessment Established

Dear Faculty and Staff,

The new Office of Threat Assessment, under the umbrella of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Operations, is available to provide support to the entire university community. 

What Threat Assessment does:

• The Office of Threat Assessment receives and evaluates reports of concerning or potentially threatening behavior involving individuals who may be at risk of violence to students, faculty, staff or visitors. 
• The office engages with campus partners (such as Illinois Human Resources, Office of the Dean of Students, academic units, the Division of Public Safety and others) to reduce such risks, including direct intervention with those who may be on a pathway to violence.
• The new office combines and replaces the efforts from the former Behavioral Intervention Team within Student Affairs and the Threat Assessment Team within Illinois Human Resources. 

How to contact Threat Assessment:

• File a report online through the Online Reporting Tool.
• Call the Threat Assessment Program at 217-244-2850 or email threatassessment@illinois.edu.
• For imminent threats and emergencies, always call 911.

When to contact Threat Assessment:

• If you are concerned about an individual (e.g., colleague, student, visitor or related party) please contact Threat Assessment with the information you have. The team will assess the situation and provide relevant assistance and support to impacted individuals.
• There are often observable behaviors or circumstances that indicate someone needs assistance and is at increased risk for violence. The Threat Assessment webpage identifies risk factors that may indicate developing concerns. Please note that these examples are not all-inclusive, and this information is not intended to be used as a checklist. 
• Even if you cannot identify specific risk factors, please contact the team if you are concerned.
