Preparing for the Presidential Search
Dear University of Illinois System Community,
On January 8, President Tim Killeen announced his decision to step down on June 30, 2027, at the conclusion of his current contract. With this transition on the horizon, the University of Illinois Board of Trustees is beginning preparations for a search to identify the next president of the University of Illinois System. Selecting our next leader is among the board’s most important responsibilities, and we are committed to a process that is inclusive and grounded in the highest standards of integrity. Because we have more than a year before the transition, we are fortunate to have the time needed to prepare thoughtfully. This extended runway allows us to execute a search process that is deliberate, well structured, and informed by meaningful engagement across our community. Our first step is to identify an executive search firm to support this work. In parallel, the board will determine the composition of a search committee and collaborate with each of our campuses to nominate members. Beginning with faculty representation and including other key stakeholders, this committee of diverse viewpoints will play a central role in shaping the leadership profile for prospective candidates. We will also create opportunities for staff, students, alumni, donors, and system partners to share their perspectives. These contributions will help ensure that the search reflects the values, aspirations, and excellence of the entire U of I System. We anticipate completing these preparatory steps by mid‑spring and launching the public search by late spring, with the goal of concluding the process by the end of the 2026 calendar year. This message is the first in a series of updates designed to keep you informed and engaged throughout the search. Thank you for the dedication and excellence you bring to the U of I System every day—qualities that make this institution a destination for exceptional leaders.
Sincerely, Jesse Ruiz Chair |
